Immerse yourself in the full sensory richness of southern Morocco on this three-day private journey from Marrakech to the Erg Chebbi dunes. Unlike a simple point-to-point desert run, this itinerary is built around the legendary 'Road of a Thousand Kasbahs' an ancient caravan highway lined with towering fortress villages, flowering oases, and rose valleys that unfolds across one of the most cinematically beautiful landscapes on earth.
You will overnight in the heart of the Dades Canyons before riding a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes for a second night spent at a traditional desert camp beneath the Saharan stars. Optional room and camp upgrades are available for those who wish to elevate the experience further.
Itinerary
- An early pick-up from your Marrakech riad or hotel begins this sweeping southern journey. Crossing the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, your first stop is the fortified ksar of Ait Ben Haddou ÔÇö a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose honey-coloured earthen ramparts provided the backdrop for Lawrence of Arabia and many other classic films. Continuing east through Ouarzazate, the road dips south through the Valley of the Roses, where fields of pink blooms perfume the air each spring, before climbing into the dramatic Dades Canyons. Arriving at Boumalne Dades as evening falls, your hotel nestles against extraordinary rock formations for dinner and an overnight in one of Morocco's most spectacular natural settings.
- After breakfast, the 'Road of a Thousand Kasbahs' carries you east through the small oasis town of Tinghir and into the dramatic Todra Gorge ÔÇö a vertical slot canyon where sheer 300-metre limestone walls tower above a shallow river, pausing for free time to explore on foot. Continuing to Merzouga, the first glimpse of the impossibly tall Erg Chebbi dunes rising from the flat desert floor is a genuine jaw-drop moment. A camel caravan takes over from here, carrying you into the dunes in time for the sunset light show. Arrive at your Berber desert camp for an authentic Moroccan dinner beneath a ceiling of stars, with local nomads providing musical entertainment around the campfire.
- Wake before dawn for the optional sunrise camel trek ÔÇö a private moment of extraordinary beauty as the dunes shift from deep purple through amber and gold. After a traditional Berber breakfast, your vehicle takes the scenic return route west, stopping in Ouarzazate for lunch and a chance to explore the town's kasbah and bazaar before the final drive back over the Atlas to Marrakech.
